SCS ENGINEERS ANNOUNCES THIRD ANNUAL SWANA SCHOLARSHIP
FOR GRADUATE STUDIES IN SOLID WASTE

(Long Beach, Calif. - November 12, 1998) -- SCS Engineers is pleased to announce that Eric Solano of North Carolina State University is the recipient of the fourth annual SCS Engineers Scholarship Award for Solid Waste Management. The $5,000 stipend was made by SCS Engineers through the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Grant H. Flint Scholarship Award Program. The scholarship was announced at the SWANA Annual WasteCon Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina during October 1998.

Mr. Solano has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Costa Rica in 1991, and an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1996, where he achieved a GPA of 3.75 out of 4.00. He is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program at the University of North Carolina. His current Ph.D. grades are a 3.70 out of 4.00.

His Ph.D. dissertation involves developing a model to evaluate multiple solid waste management alternatives, taking into consideration both project economics and environmental impact. It examines the potential for the generation and control of landfill gas emissions, and their impact on global warming through the release of greenhouse gases.

SCS Engineers congratulates Mr. Solano on his award. SWANA Scholarship awards are highly competitive, with 14 pre-qualified candidates competing for this year’s scholarship awards, including the SCS award, the top award in the scholarship program.

SCS Engineers established funding of a scholarship award through SWANA in 1994, with an annual commitment of $5,000. The award is made each year to a graduate student specializing in municipal solid waste management. Selection criteria include academics (30 percent), extra-curricular and community activities (20 percent), and graduate studies that advance the subject of municipal solid waste management (50 percent).
